"20 Years of Friendship:" Promoting the Pixar Studio Via the "Legacy Trailer" [Micro-talk] In October 2015, a video entitled “20 Years of Friendship” was posted on Disney-Pixar’s YouTube Channel. Opening with clips from Pixar films, from Toy Story to Inside Out, this celebration of the studio’s animated history was succeeded by the advertising of Pixar’s latest release: The Good Dinosaur. My micro-talk will focus on Pixar’s recurrent use of this specific type of trailer, that I term “legacy trailers”: how they repurpose Pixar’s canon, and in what ways they contribute to the wider discourses surrounding the studio. I will argue that the governing principle of these self-reflexive trailers, looking fondly back at Pixar’s past features, is nostalgia. Using trailers for Wall-E, Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur as case studies, I will analyse how this marketing trope helps Pixar sell itself, striving to perpetuate, and at times revive its aura of prestige within a growingly competitive animation market.
