CFP Genre and Animation
When it comes to labelling the latest animated releases to the audience, websites such as the Internet Movie Database or Rotten Tomatoes most often use “animation” to generically categorize them. Can “animation” be considered as a medium, a style, and/or a genre? Should animated films be included in studies of “live-action” genres such as the action film, science fiction, or romantic comedy? Or do animated films rework generic trends in their own terms?
Topics may include but are not limited to:
1. Animation as genre
2. Live-action genres (western, melodrama, fairy tale, action film, science fiction, superhero film, comedy, documentary, etc.) and animation
3. Animation, generic parody and pastiche
4. Animation, genre and audience (“children films”, family films, etc.)
5. Labelling and marketing animated films
