Bristol's Fascinating Past: Literacy Project

Activity: Talk or presentation typesSchools engagement

Description

In March 2014, Laurence Publicover and I, together with fifteen of our undergraduate students, undertook a ‘literacy invention’ organised in collaboration with Mr Jo Thurston at St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School in Bristol. Over two full days, we engaged young readers (at Key Stage 3) with travellers’ tales, stories of Bristol’s fascinating past as a maritime city, and other kinds of seafaring adventures, in order to support the improvement of literacy skills. The school pupils were invited to engage with a variety of sources through role play, written work, and listening exercises, in order to generate ideas to use as the basis for designing a computer game; each pupil invited to participate was paired with one of our own students who acted as a mentor and ‘research expert’.
