BGER Perceiving Robots as Social Agents UK
The field of social robotics is driven by the idea that one day personal robots will enter the home to play a number of assistive roles (such as supporting older members of the society in everyday tasks). However, how can autonomous robots be built that can be trusted in their close interaction with people? Possible solutions to this challenge need to be universal, e.g. free of cultural differences, expectations or abilities. In this Bristol-Kyoto collaboration, we investigate whether Joint attention and Theory of Mind research could help to develop robots that can produce universal social interactive behaviours such as those thought to underpin successful human-human interaction and engagement.
