Description
Invited to present Designing Virtual AntiquitiesAbstract
What research questions are raised through the process of designing virtual reality and video game-based experiences of the ancient world? What questions can be answered? Are these questions different from those formulated through other types of systematic inquiry? This talk takes a behind-the-scenes look at the design and development of two academic-led projects: the Virtual Reality Oracle, which approximates the experience of visiting the ancient oracle of Zeus of Dodona in northwest Greece, and CultureQuest a prototype, AI-powered videogame that offers new ways to explore the Egyptian afterlife in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery's Egyptian Gallery. Both projects provide an end-to-end look at the development process, from initial design decisions to iterative development and the study of player experiences. By thinking through the collaborative nature of these projects, including the learnings from working with games companies, this talk explores the art of the possible when engaging critically and ethically with the digital future of the past.
