Description
These activities are enabling Nina to develop collaborative partnerships that will support her emerging independent research plans within her current fellowship applications and towards contributing to future Horizon Europe proposals. The core of Nina’s research plans sit central to our School’s research strategy as combatting the losses in agriculture due to pests and diseases is a global need. This is a key challenge within School research strategy under Transforming Sustainable Food Production. We currently know that between 20-30% of potential crop yield is lost due to pests and diseases. Our strategic aim to find ways to combat these crop losses by better understanding the biology of host-pathogen interactions, by improving the plant’s resistance to such pests and diseases, by identifying new control agents that minimise environmental impact, and by modifying farming practise to make better use of ecosystem services to control these issues. This research also embodies our University research strategy in the areas of environment and sustainability. Nina has support from both our relevant University research institutes, the Cabot Institute for the Environment and the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute of Health. This activity is enabling Nina to network with new contacts and present recent work at the International Plant Protection Congress in Athens (1-5 July). It is also facilitating a visit to a cucurbit virus research field site and institution in Spain where researchers are working on melon viruses and drought stress.
