In a dark room a TV screen is a flurry of interference. A man begins to speak. He arrived in the UK by train, having not seen his family for four years. His own children hardly recognised him. It’s 1989, the voice belongs to the father of the British-Iranian filmmaker Nariman Massoumi. The home video of an apparently happy Iranian family is played in an endless loop, in the background a nostalgic Persian pop song that soon begins to irritate. The distorted “happy family” images take on a new meaning. An autobiographic experimental film about family reunification and life in exile. Nariman Massoumi is a filmmaker, academic researcher and lecturer at the University of Bristol. His research and practice explores the relationship between documentary, family memory and displacement. At the BBC he directed and produced the TV documentary Heath before the Health Service: A Medical Revolution (2012). His latest film, How Do You See Me (2016) is an experimental documentary portrait on his mother. He is currently developing a film and research project on Anglo-Iranian oil films.
