Description

In a change to my advertised paper, I will be present on 'Gender, Grandeur, and French Literary Commemoration in the 19th Century' and discuss my emerging project on the masculinist drive exhibited by France's Third Republic in memorialising its so-called 'great men'. I will then juxtapose that cultural legacy with the more unsettled masculinity on display on those writers' works in order to demonstrate the significance of recent critical discourse in gender studies to problematising a key (gendered) aspect of the French national consciousness at a time of renewed concern over the State's identity.
