Description

BGER Sustainable iron-based catalysts in carbon-carbon bond-formation (Princeton)

Bedford visited the group of Prof. Paul Chirik in Princeton (Jan 22-30th). Paul is an acknowledged leader in probing iron catalysts for reduction chemistry but has not previously investigated the application of his techniques, in particular the use of Mossbauer spectroscopy (which is not available at Bristol), to carbon-carbon bond-forming catalysis. Furthermore, the visit to Princeton was supplemented with a trip to Rochester to meet with Prof. Mike Neidig. Mike is an expert in magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. This visit proved invaluable in demonstrating the potential role of this technique to studies on the intermediates in iron-catalysed carbon-carbon bond-formation.
