RLSI Conference: European Romanticism
I gave a talk entitled: 'Victor Hugo and his Contemporaries'. In February 1830, Victor Hugo's play 'Hernani' premiered to a riotous reception, sparking a revolution on stage that anticipated the July Revolution later that year. This lecture investigated how Hugo and his Romantic generation, including writers like Balzac and Dumas, responded to these historical shifts in their work, fashioning a productive dialogue between Romantic idealism and the Realist mindset that was emerging during this tense but exciting period.
