STEM / Science lunchtime lectures - Stover School, Newton Abbot

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesInvited talk

Description

Invited talk title: How systems thinking can help us better understand and respond to the complex grand challenges of our time, with a special focus on the climate emergency. This was a school engagement event, in which I was invited to contribute to a STEM lecture series for KS4 and KS5 students (GCSE and A-level). I introduced systems thinking as an evidence-based approach that allows us to understand the root causes and structural forces which underpin complex challenges (such as climate breakdown), and the often invisible feedback loops and unintended consequences of short-cut solutions that are not sufficiently grounded in systemic wisdom and insight. I introduced the audience to a range of the simpler systemic thinking tools/frameworks, and ended with some hopeful messages regarding how we might, individually and collectively, develop the capacity to think systemically. Through this lecture, I offered a balance of insights from the sciences and social sciences, showing how such an interdisciplinary approach is necessary in order to address some of the biggest and most important challenges of our times.
