The Anatomy of Sex and Gender (Guest Lecture, 3hrs)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesPublic talk, debate, discussion

Description

The terms sex and gender are often used interchangeably. This seminar will explore the differences between sex and gender and how these are expressed in anatomy. Both sex and gender have classically been described in binary terms, with people classified as either male or female, but is this true? Does it represent the reality for all individuals? How do we make space for those outside the binary?

We will review sexually dimorphic anatomy and sexual characteristics and explore how they are presented in the male and female human on a biological level, before considering how society shapes our understanding of sex. This session will explore the gender identity of individuals in gender and sexual minority (GSM) communities and consider the relationships that they may have with their bodies.
