International Member of Organizing Committee for a NEES Grand challenges workshop

NSF was seeking input for the preparation of plans for Fiscal Year 2014 and beyond to address “Grand Challenges in basic earthquake engineering research.” NSF sought advice from the broader earthquake engineering community in particular so that the NEES program beyond 2014 would not be focused on or limited to existing facilities but would build on the synergies provided by networked facilities and the cyberinfrastructure tools to achieve solutions to the grand challenge problems. At the request of NSF (see Statement of Task, Box S.1), the National Research Council (NRC) held a two-day workshop to give members of the community an opportunity to identify these grand challenges and to describe the networked earthquake engineering experimental capabilities and cyberinfrastructure tools required to address them.
