BGER Multi-scale composites fracture modelling, research visit to University of British Columbia
This collaboration took the form of a research visit to the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada. The field of study was on experimental and modelling techniques for notched composites, combining the advantages of both detailed modelling of individual damage mechanisms and global modelling of large scale structural behaviour.
Specifically this work aims to characterise size effects in composites laminates. Thus tests were undertaken on a range of specimen sizes to understand the failure mechanisms of scaled notched specimens. Then using finite element numerical analysis, we can predict failure strength of larger specimens, and design tests to validate modelling results. The ultimate aim of this work is to predict the failure strength of real world structures from small scale experimental results.
