University of Oxford: French Postgraduate Research Seminars
My talk was entitled: 'Sartrean Legacies of Romanticism'. Iris Murdoch once described Jean-Paul Sartre as a 'Romantic Rationalist', but how accurate was this description. and does it hold any potential for a positive reappraisal of Sartre's relationship to Romanticism? This lecture argued that Sartre's debt to (and interest in) Romantic thinking had been progressively downplayed across his career, and that a critical return to the common ground between Existentialist thinking and Romantic artistry has been long overdue.
