Bristol 1465-6: Particulars of Account of Thomas Gibbes and Robert Strangways, customers, 28 November 1465 to 14 May 1466

Transcription and translation, on an EXCEL spreadsheet, of an Exchequer ‘particular’ customers' account for Bristol for 28 Nov 1465 - 14 May 1466, based on TNA, E122/19/4. The spreadsheet is accompanied by a 4,100-word introduction (pdf), which focuses on the chief oddity of the account. This is that much of the trade is recorded under the names of four Bristol merchants: William Canynges, John Shipward, John Gaywood and Robert Baron. This is shown to be a legal fiction employed to allow the four to recoup a loan to the Crown that was to be redeemed through an exemption on customs dues payable in the port.
