The University of Bristol has a cluster of research and teaching excellence across the life sciences, from bio-nanotechnology to earth system science, from biochemistry to experimental psychology, from individuals to societies.
Organisms - how they function, evolve and interact with each other and the environment - lie at the nexus of these fields, so the School of Biological Sciences is a key component of what is, on most recent metrics, the UK's No.3 Science Faculty.
In the 2008 RAE, 95% of the school's research was recognised as having international impact and 50% as being world leading or internationally excellent.
Our research is organised around three main themes that reflect our strengths and interests. Parallel to these themes, we are greatly helped by the LESARS endowment, which can fund research of agricultural relevance.
The underlying theme for all our research groups is the search for an understanding of the function, evolution, development and regulation of complex systems, pursued using the latest technologies, from '-omics' to nanoscience, and mathematical modelling tools.
