Research in the School of Chemistry encompasses a diverse range of activities within and across our three Sections. Collaborations involving both internal and external groupings are strongly promoted.
Here at Bristol we have a thriving Inorganic and Materials section with a world class reputation for research and teaching. Research in the Inorganic and Materials section has three main strands which build on its strengths as a leading international centre of molecular and materials inorganic chemistry.
The Organic and Biological Section of the School of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful in the UK, and as such makes a major contribution to the outstanding international reputation of the School of Chemistry in teaching and research.
Both of these activities are very broadly based and encompass a wide range of synthetic, supramolecular, physical organic, biological, environmental and analytical chemistry.
As befits a subject with its origins in the chemistry of life, there are strong interests in the biosynthesis, synthesis and metabolism of biologically important compounds from a wide range of natural sources.
Physical and theoretical chemistry underlies all chemistry and, increasingly, biology, engineering and medicine. It is becoming ever more important as the investigative and computation capabilities of chemists continue to increase. This section of the School of Chemistry encompasses a very wide range of important and exciting research interests, which partition loosely into a number of sub-groupings, covering broad areas of Molecular Science and of Colloid Science.
