Research interests

My research probes the physics of earthquakes induced by fluid injection to better understand how the earth responds to hydraulic stimulation during industrial development projects (e.g., hydraulic fracturing, enhanced geothermal systems). I use earthquake source models and spectral analysis using observational source seismology and apply these to vast borehole microseismic datasets. I am currently investigating datasets from the Horn River basin (Canada) and the St.Gallen enhanced geothermal field (Switzerland).

I calculate key source parameters such as stress drop, which expresses the rupture physics and can be used as an observational constraint for earthquake mechanics and hazards. The systematic variation of stress drop in space and time can reveal crucial information about the earthquake source and the in-situ geological stresses, with a potential for mitigating the risk of induced seismicity. I am also interested in using complexities and directivity in source time functions as a tool for better understanding fracture propagation direction and rupture heterogeneity.
