Andrea Liu is a New York/Paris/Berlin-based visual art & performance critic (and visual artist). She went to Yale University (undergrad) and received art fellowship awards from Jarislowsky Outstanding Artist Award Fellowship at Banff Centre, Zurich University of the Arts, MFAH & Center for Experimental Museology (V-A-C Foundation). She wrote art criticism for e-flux, Social Text, Art Margins, Afterimage, New Museum, Contemporaneity: Historical Presence in Visual Culture, Movement Research Journal, & wrote catalogue/exhibition essays for visual artists Georgia Sagri (Deste Foundation), Kandis Williams (Soft Colony), Aditya Mandayam (Kunstverein Munich), Bob Gramsma (Edition Fink).

I often write about Post-Soviet Intermedia (within visual culture), such as:  https://contemporaneity.pitt.edu/ojs/contemporaneity/article/view/346/332  or https://schoolofcommons.org/making-public/issues/2023/post-structuralist-fun-pack, and often work with Russian (or Russophone) visual artists: https://edcat.net/events/between-the-fugue-and-the-origin/ and was a Fellow at “Museum in a Liminal State” Center for Experimental Museology (i.e. founded by acclaimed Russian visual artist Arseny Zhilyaev: https://redmuseum.church/en/museum-in-a-liminal-state-winners and my essays of visual art criticism have been translated to Russian: https://redmuseum.church/objective-spectacle-s-clap

I often examine the distinction between postmodernism as: (A) a value-neutral indicator of a time period (B) an aesthetic category (postmodern architecture, postmodern literature) (C) a prognosis of a cultural condition (D) a postmodernism of resistance, an oppositional epistemology that destabilized the grand narratives of Enlightenment (E) a cynical ahistorical “anything goes” postmodernism disemboweled of any element of critical resistance, caricaturized as a byword for “moral relativism”. In The Anti-Aesthetic (1983), art critic Hal Foster draws a stark distinction between a postmodernism of reaction versus a “postmodernism of resistance.” I explored this in my project “Post-Structuralist Fun Pack” during my fellowship at Zurich University of the Arts: https://schoolofcommons.org/program/labs/post-structuralist-fun-pack
