Personal profile

Research interests

I am an economist and a PhD in social policy with many years of academic and professional experience in researching and designing public policy, and a long track record of teaching social policy, economics, and quantitative research methods to university students and professionals. Broadly speaking, my research is about socioeconomic inequalities in contemporary societies, the role of markets and institutions in producing and perpetuating these inequalities, and how social policy can contribute to ameliorate their effects. Apart from my doctoral and master's studies in Social Policy at the University of Oxford, a five-year BSc and a two-year MSc in Economics have equipped me with specialist skills to conduct advanced quantitative social research. Following my BSc, I embarked on a career first as a consultant and later as a civil servant with the Chilean Ministries of Planning and Social Development. In these roles, I conducted surveys, analysed large scale datasets, developed algorithms for targeting social benefits, and took part in the design and evaluation of social programs in the areas of education, health, conditional cash transfers and labour-market policy. In the UK, prior to my current role at the University of Bristol, I worked as a Senior Research and Policy Officer for the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. With my teaching and research experience, I hope to improve our understanding of how socio-economic inequalities come to be, and aim to produce high-quality social research and policy evaluation to inform and improve social policy.
