Research interests

I am from Córdoba, Spain. Received my Aerospace Engineering B.Sc. from St. Louis University (USA) in 1997, and my M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 2000 and 2004 respectively from the University of Minnesota (USA) in the group of prof. Gary Balas.

From 2004 to 2006, I was a research associate in the group of prof. Ian Postlethwaite at the University of Leicester (UK) working in a Group for Aeronautical Research and Technology in Europe (GARTEUR) project related to nonlinear flight control clearance. From 2006 to August 2013 I was with Deimos-Space S.L.U. (Spain), a Spanish space company, where I worked as lead control engineer for control and autonomy R&D projects for the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission Framework Program (EC-FP).

During my time at Deimos I was main proposer and coordinator of the EU-FP7 project entitled “Advanced Fault Diagnosis for Sustainable Flight Guidance and Control (ADDSAFE)” [http://addsafe.deimos-space.com/], which ran from July 2009 to October 2012. This was the first ever EU project coordinated at Deimos. Subsequently, from January 2013 until my departure in August 2013, I also lead the proposal and coordinated the EU-FP7 project entitled “Reconfiguration of Control in Flight for Integral Global Upset Recovery (RECONFIGURE)” [http://reconfigure.deimos-space.com/]. Both projects were established to study and transfer model-based FDIR techniques to commercial aircraft and were participated by Airbus as well as several European research organizations and universities.

In October 2013, I joined the Aerospace Engineering department at the University of Bristol (UK), were I have formed and lead the Technology for Aerospace Control (TASC) lab, http://www.tasc-group.com/. The aim of TASC is the development and application of modern control techniques to aeronautical and space systems. The technical focus is on robust control techniques applied to fault detection\identification\reconfiguration (FDIR) and flight control (FCS) of aerospace vehicles; flight control Verification and Validation (V&V); and research on linear fractional transformation (LFT) and linear parameter varying (LPV) techniques for modeling, design and analysis.

Current aeronautics projects are funded by the European H2020 framework programme (FLEXOP and VISION) and for space by the European Space Agency (V&Vprob and VEGAdapt) and the UK Space Agency (NTSP2).
