Anatomy and function of the basal sauropodomorph dinosaur Thecodontosaurus antiquus

Dinosaurs, key components of Mesozoic terrestrial ecosystems, achieved a remarkable morphological and ecological diversity throughout their evolution. The first dinosaurs originated in the Triassic, and many aspects of their palaeobiology and evolutionary relationships remain contentious. Sauropodomorpha are one of the main dinosaur lineages and included the largest land animals that ever existed. Thecodontosaurus antiquus, from the Late Triassic of Europe, is among the earliest sauropodomorphs and provides highly relevant information about the anatomy of these basal forms.


My PhD focuses on updating the osteology and endocranial anatomy of Thecodontosaurus and reconstructing its limb musculature and palaeobiology. Using biomechanical techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) and physical experiments, tooth function and mechanics will be studied in early dinosaurs and compared to modern reptiles. Dental form and function will be characterised by a combination of computational methods to infer the possible diet of dinosaurs and the evolution of feeding strategies in different clades.
