Research interests

Mechanisms for endosomal sorting of membrane proteins.

Cells within tissues and organs must efficiently communicate with one another and sense the extracellular environment. This is achieved by the presence of membrane proteins, such as receptors, ion channels and nutrient transporters. To ensure that the membrane proteins are expressed at the correct location, cells have evolved highly organised intracellular sorting pathways, such as the endosomal pathway.
Professor Cullen's group studies the mechanisms of protein sorting by multiprotein complexes that function through the endosomal pathway. My research focus is to understand the molecular basis for protein recycling by endosome-associated SNX-BARs, and its implications in host-pathogen interactions. To achieve these aims, I use biochemical and cellular techniques, including knock-down or knock-out approaches, imaging techniques, together with extensive proteomics.
