Research interests

My principal research interest lies in Italian cinema. I am the author of The Non-Professional Actor. Italian Neorealist Cinema and Beyond (Bloomsbury, 2023), and Stars and Masculinities in Contemporary Italian Cinema (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). I am also co-author of Italian Cinema Audiences (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020), and (with Jacqueline Reich) of Divi: la mascolinita' nel cinema italiano (Donzelli, 2015), and of articles and chapters on contemporary and post-war Italian cinema.

I have worked extensively on star studies, genre, and fandom, and am currently co-editing a book on Italian youth television.

From 2019-24 I was Co-Investigator on the European Research Council-funded project Studiotec: Film Studios: Infrastructure, Culture, Innovation in Britain, France, Germany and Italy, 1930-60 https://studiotec.info/

I was previously Co-Investigator on the AHRC-funded research project, 'In Search of Italian Cinema Audiences' which combined oral history, audience studies and archival research to generate a portrait of post-war Italian cineam audiences http://italiancinemaaudiences.org/.
