Research Overview

Charlotte's initial research began in the area of cancer genetics completing her PhD funded by the Leukaemia Research Fund in 2005. Her thesis investigated whether certain cytokine genotypes and haplotypes play a role in the development and susceptibility of B cell lymphoproliferative diseases.

Charlotte went onto work for the Cancer Research UK and the Department of Health funded CAP (Cluster randomised triAl of testing for Prostate cancer) trial which evaluated the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of population screening (PSA testing) for prostate cancer, which involved over 430,000 men in the UK.

In 2014 Charlotte began working on interventions to improve the diagnosis of HIV in Primary care, this led to her co-ordinating a pilot randomised controlled trial of a GP educational intervention to increase HIV testing in high HIV prevalence general practices in Bristol.

In 2018 Charlotte started working within the Bristol Centre for Surgical Research on the BRaveR study. This study investigated methods to develop and deliver better research to improve outcomes and inform practice in breast reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer. Charlotte went onto manage the ANTHEM feasibility study investigating if oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery is a safe and effective surgical alternative to mastectomy for treatment of breast cancer, involving over 35 breast units across the UK.

Currently, Charlotte works within the Bristol Surgical and Peri-operative Complex Intervention Collaboration (BriSPOCC) on the evaluation of complex healthcare interventions to improve care for patients undergoing surgery for chronic limb threatening ischaemia (CLTI). Charlotte began working at Bristol University in 1998 and has worked at the Bristol Medical School since 2007.
