Personal profile

Research interests

Christine has worked in the area of mucosal immunology for many years, on topics such as feline immunodeficiency virus infection of mucosal surfaces, epithelial cell function, mucosal vaccine development and the effect of n3-PUFA on mucosal inflammation. Her most recent research studied the role of IL-13 in intestinal fibrosis in Crohn's disease. The principle findings were that IL-13 promoted collagen accumulation via supression of MMP synthesis and that newly recruited innate immune cells were a key source of IL-13. An extensive range of methodologies have been used in these projects. Christine now works to support the School of Veterinary Science in the broad range of its research activities, by managing research processes; promoting collaborations and organising events.

Research findings

Large numbers of mononuclear cells expressing very high levels of IL-13R1, KIR and CD56 are only found in the muscle of Crohn’s disease patients with fibrosis.
