Dr Murphy's research and teaching interests lie in the relationship between collective power and individual rights and the role that law plays in that relationship. His current writing focuses on the dynamics of transnational law and their impact on legality. It has been published in Transnational Legal Theory and is forthcoming in the Oxford Handbook of Transnational Law. A monograph which concludes the project will be published in 2020.

Dr Murphy has served on several journal editorial boards. At present he is the Co-Editor in Chief of the Common Law World Review. He sits on the Committee of the American Society of International Law Mid-Year Meeting and Research Forum 2019. He is also the editor, with the late David D. Caron, of the Elgar Research Collection in Transnational Law, due for publication in 2020.

Dr Murphy’s first monograph, EU Counter-terrorism Law: Pre-emption & the Rule of Law, won the SLS Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship (Second Prize) in 2013, with an expanded edition published in 2015. In 2014 Dr Murphy published, with Diego Acosta Arcarazo, EU Security and Justice Law: After Lisbon and Stockholm.
