I am currently undertaking a three-year Diabetes UK funded PhD Studentship into Type 1 Diabetes. My project primarily focuses on one of the four major autoantibody biomarkers that has been used to identify individuals at risk of the disease. The protein ZnT8 and subsequent autoantibodies, ZnT8A have been shown to be in ~70+% of newly-diagnosed individuals but ZnT8A can also remain in circulating blood for many years in individuals that have not progressed to disease. My project aims to work out what areas of the ZnT8A protein the autoantibodies are directed to, confirm the expression of ZnT8 as part of historically used ICA staining in pancreatic sections and investigate whether ZnT8 and ZnT8A could help identify some mechanisms some individuals appear to have that regulate the autoimmune response in Type 1 Diabetes and delays disease onset.
