Personal profile

Research interests

I graduated with a BSc in veterinary medicine and a PhD focussing on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in wildlife populations from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. I specialise in wildlife diseases and have worked in four wildlife rehabilitation centres in Spain as well as provided support for the development of other wildlife centres across the world. I have also worked in small companies as a research manager, bridging the gap between academic research and industry.

I completed my postgraduate studies with an MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2018. Since then, I have been working as epidemiologist, first at the Royal Veterinary College and currently as a Senior Research Associate at the Bristol Veterinary School. My research is focused on providing a better understanding of AMR and its drivers in different farming systems as well as its potential implications for the environment and human health.

My main research interests address epidemiological aspects of complex questions that have a strong environmental component, such as AMR. I am particularly keen to research the linkage between humans, livestock, wildlife and the environment by adopting a One Health perspective. I think answering these complex questions requires an understanding of how they are embedded in and shaped by the context and practices of the different actors involved in their complexity. Hence, I very much value the importance of multidisciplinary research. I also advocate for incorporating critical reflection about a researcher’s role in the interpretation of results, as numbers by themselves do not really have any meaning. As Nate Silver said in ‘The Signal and the Noise’, “The numbers have no way of speaking for themselves, we speak for them. We imbue them with meaning.
