Research interests

My research focuses the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and their services and their ability to acclimate and adapt. We focus on marine ecosystems and their reaction to climate change today and response to environmental change in the geological record. Our work covers a range of organisms from bryozoans, bivalves, corals and coralline algae to marine plankton.

My group and I are internationally know to design and adopt novel tools from a wide range of fields such as biology and engineering to provide novel insights. I enjoy working at the interfaces between disciplines, for example working jointly with colleagues in law and human geography, and research cultures with other academics and stakeholders.

I have contributed as a lead author of the 2014 IPCC report WGII, the  Expert Group Member of EU SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) of the European Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) on the topic "Food from the Oceans". Currently the coordinating lead author for the WGII IPCC on impacts, adaptation and vulnerability focussing on Europe.

My research highlights were:

  • Linked the rate of ocean acidification to the magnitude of impact on marine ecosystems
  • Characterised past intervals of rapid environmental change and determined the biotic response to these global changes
  • Described the unique nature of our ongoing ocean acidification in a geological context
