Research Supervision

In recent years I have supervised PhD projects on P. B. Shelley, Victorian poetry and fiction, and nineteenth-
century American literature. I am currently supervising a PhD on Bob Dylan and American landscape. My research is concentrated in British and American literature of the long nineteenth century (17801920), especially but not exclusively poetry. Authors in whom I take a particular interest are Robert Browning, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Marcel Proust and Bob Dylan. I am also interested in textual criticism (especially the editing of poetry and letters). I would welcome research proposals in any of these areas.

In undergraduate teaching I contribute to a number of core period units, mainly eighteenth and nineteenth century but also including literature from earlier and later periods. The special subjects I have taught in recent years include 'Theory and Practice of Literary Editing', 'New England's Dreaming' (nineteenth-century American literature from Washington Irving to Henry James), and 'Beats & Crazies' (mid20th century American writing from Kerouac and Ginsberg to Norman Mailer and Robert Coover). From 201617 I will be teaching a special subject called 'Darkest London' (representations of the city as threatened by fire, plague, crime, the Blitz, etc.).

In MA teaching I contribute to classes on Romantic and Victorian literature (e.g. Victorian Literature of Place) and to the Introduction to Literary Research where I focus on editorial issues.
