I am interested in social attitudes to magical practice in early modern English society; my thesis explores how late-Elizabethan- and early-Jacobean drama presented magic and its practitioners to those attending dramatic performances in Shakespearean London. The thesis's focus on witchcraft, incantation, music, and the border establishes a lucid framework capturing how common folk viewed strange and otherworldly phenomena in a politically- and socially-tempestuous world.
I have presented my research at Shakespeare's Globe, the University of Bristol, and Sheffield Hallam University. Further presentations of my work will take place at the International Medieval Congress at the University of Leeds and at the annual conference of the British Shakespeare Association. At Bristol, I also teach an introductory module for first year students that explores early modern societies. This course examines the Reformation, the scientific revolution, medicine, colonialisation, and contemporaneous folkloric customs.
I am the author for Editions and Textual Studies in Shakespeare for the Year's Work in English Studies, a peer-reviewed, international journal published for the English Association by Oxford University Press, reviewing recent contributions to the field of Shakespearean studies.
Archaeological study is a further pastime and hobby of mine; I have interests in the henges of Neolithic Britain, the Viking settlements of northern Denmark, and the Mesopotamian civilisations c. 3000 BC. Undergraduate studies in Archaeology and History at the University of Reading have added some depth to this interest.
