Ella is a SWWDTP-funded PhD candidate in the Department of History. Her project, 'Predatory Rhetoric within the Language of Physiognomy: An Investigation of Literary and Scientific Methods of Racial Othering in Antebellum America', examines how physiognomy generated predatory racial discourse in the Antebellum United States. Her research explores how pseudo-scientific ideas of racial difference informed literary representations and practices of dehumanisation. This project seeks to make an original contribution to scholarship on race, science, and literature by identifying physiognomy as a key site in the development and circulation of predatory racial discourse.
