Personal profile

Research interests

  • Ischaemic heart and peripheral vascular disease have been identified as NHS treatment priorities. Frank Smith undertakes collaborative research with Prof GD Angelini, Prof JY Jeremy and Prof Sarah George, at the Bristol Heart Institute, investigating attenuation of medial and intimal hyperplasia in vein bypass grafts (a pathophysiological process accounting for premature occlusion and thrombosis of many peripheral and cardiac bypass grafts) and the vascular biology of aortic aneurysms. He is also involved in an on-going programme of vascular laboratory-based research with NHS colleagues into clinical aspects of vascular disease, including systemic effects of intermittent claudication and modalities of vascular investigation.
  • He has been the recipient of a Royal College of Surgeons Pump-Priming Grant, and 2 of his Research Fellows have been awarded highly competitive Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowships.
  • He is Chair of the national Joint Vascular Research Group (JVRG) participating in national multicentre trials (among others) of Vein Graft Surveillance; General vs Local Anaesthesia in carotid arterial surgery (GALA); Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial (ACST); Carotid Artery Sub-occlusion Study (Principal Investigator); & Outcomes in Venous Surgery. He is a regular contributor to the evidence-based educational books on various aspects of vascular disease published by the JVRG.
