Heather Birch is a Research Associate and foraminiferal specialist currently working on the ERC-funded PALEOGENiE project, exploring past links in the evolution of oceans global environment and ecology.

Heather is a micropalaeontologist, specialising in biostratigraphy and foraminiferal based geochemical records. She is interested in understanding the timing and nature of interactions between global climate, geochemical cycling and biota. Much of her research to date has focused on the biotic and geochemical recovery after the end Cretaceous mass extinction. Part of this work has involved evaluating and refining geochemical proxies (e.g. δ13C) in fossil and modern foraminiferal carbonate to help improve reconstructions.

Key research interests:-

-          Biotic and geochemical response to mass extinctions

-          Palaeoecology of planktonic foraminifera

-          Geochemical and biotic proxies for reconstructing past climates
