Personal profile

Research interests

I am scientist awhose research explores the interactions between the Earth’s surface, atmosphere, and climate. I study work volcanic emissions, using remote sensing, and what they tell us about volcanic process, hazards and thie impacts on aviation, the environment and climate. I have led international field campaigns to some of the world’s most active volcanoes, with a specialism in Central America and particularly Guatemala. My research extends into the broader field of climate science, including investigations into solar radiation management and the ethical, environmental, and technical implications of climate engineering. I have contributed to national and international policy discussions, aiming to connect rigorous science with real-world decision-making. Recently I have been able to apply my expertise in machine learning, digital image processing and uncrewed aerial vehicles to problems in wildlife conservation, working in Cameroon and Kenya.

I enjoy appearing in media and public forums, helping to explain complex environmental issues to wider audiences. My work combines technological innovation, environmental insight, and a strong interdisciplinary ethos, reflecting my belief that science should both deepen understanding and inform solutions to global challenges.
