Research interests

Associate Professor in Social Sciences and Health at The Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC), Bristol Medical School. I co-lead the Behavioural and Qualitative Science Team for National Institute for Health Research Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Research Collaboration West (NIHR ARC West) and Intervention Optimisation and Implementation Theme co-lead for NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Behavioural Science and Evaluation.

I have an interest in developing pragmatic and collaborative intensive qualitative methods to support more effective implementation of healthcare innovation. I have expertise in designing and applying qualitative methods in the development and evaluation of complex interventions/health services. In addition, the integration of qualitative methods with randomised controlled trials to improve their design and conduct and I co-convene the EQUATe: ‘Excellence in QUAlitative research in Trials’ research group. 

My research interests including users' experience of health and health services, acceptability of clinical interventions, clinical decision-making, chronic illness, infectious diseases, primary care, public health, sexual health and digital health.

I am currently responsible for the qualitative evaluation for a number of NIHR funded trials:

  • EPIToPeEvaluating the Population Impact of Hepatitis C Direct Acting Antiviral Treatment as Prevention for People Who Inject Drugs
  • ADEPT - Guided Self-Help for Depression in adults with Autism: A feasibility RCT
  • CEDAR - The children's ear pain study
  • CHICO - The CHIldren with COugh Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial 
  • HepCATT - Evaluation of interventions designed to increase diagnosis and treatment of patients with Hepatitis C virus infection in primary care
  • RADAR - Reducing Alzheimer's Disease through Angiotensin TaRgetting
  • REST - Immediate Oral, Immediate Topical or Delayed Oral Antibiotics for Acute Otitis Media with Discharge: The Runny Ear Study
  • UPSTREAM - Urodynamics for Prostate Surgery Trial; Randomised Evaluation of Assessment of Methods for diagnosis and management of bladder outlet obstruction in men

In addition, I am Principal Investigator/qualitative lead for a number of applied health research projects:

I have been involved in successful grant applications from the UK’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), including NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR); NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme and NIHR School for Primary Care Research and also Medical Research Council (MRC), Public Health England, The Royal College of General Practitioners and charities.
