Personal profile

Research interests

I specialise in literature of the long fifteenth century and, particularly, Scottish literature. I am broadly interested in the interplay between cultural identity and literary production across a range of traditions, including discourses of alterity, history of emotions and historical narrative. My doctoral research stimulated an ongoing interest in questions concerning pre-modern understandings of remembrance and commemoration in the articulation of both individual and collective identities. I am currently writing a book on memory and Scottish nationhood in the fourtenth and fifteenth centuries.

My research interests in memory have led to work on confession and the history of emotions, and my next project examines the cultural histrory of melancholy in Scottish literature.
