Research interests

Katy is Senior Lecturer in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and she works with colleagues across the Faculty of Health Sciences and beyond. Katy's research includes cost-effectiveness and transmission dynamic modelling to evaluate interventions to prevent infectious disease in human and animal populations, especially zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance. Katy enjoys facilitating sharing of expertise and methodology between veterinary and human infectious disease epidemiology, especially in research at the intersection of the two specialities: zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance and the use of applied genomic profiling technologies. 

EPSRC Bridging the Gaps in AMR project (Adrian Mulholland PI) project is an exciting example of research in Bristol seeking to develop innovative methods to address health care problems using multidisciplinary research. Katy is a member of the newly established Health Protection Research Unit in Evaluation of Interventions, one of 12 national centres funded by NIHR, set up to support research activities of Public Health England (Directors Matthew Hickman and Isabel Oliver). 

Katy sits on the Infection and Immunity steering committee.

Research interests

Katy previously held an  NIHR research fellowship at Bristol University, School of Social and Community Medicine. She developed economic and mathematical tools for interventions to improve sexual health, mainly focused on the control of sexually transmitted infections including gonorrhoea and chlamydia. A model and analysis of the cost and effectiveness of partner notification and screening for chlamydia was published in the BMJ ( http://www.bmj.com/content/342/bmj/c7250.short). This included a user-friendly spreadsheet which is designed to be used by local commissioners to evaluate and improve their own services. Katy, together with Bristol collaborators, is keen to bridge the gap between cutting edge research and clinical practice. This involves a series of related projects working closely with local PHE and local authorities to understand local data and provide local solutions, ultimately aiming to improve the quality of service provision in the South West and more widely.

Katy is  economic modelling lead for the Sexual Health Improvement Programme (SHIPP) - one of several Health Integration Teams set up to support Public Health functions locally. 

She is an associate editor of Sexually Transmitted Infections journal and a member of the regional SW BASSH committee and BASSH public health special interest group

EPINETS - was a University funded project to investigate methods of network inference from respondent driven sampling data (RDS) and to develop a facebook application to replicate RDS sampling, within a known network to test the performance of the network inference.
