Well-Being: One of my primary areas of research interest is well-being and mental health. Recent well-being work has focused on understanding the fundamental nature of well-being, by taking a multidimensional approach to exploring the many dimensions that determine the quality and condition of one’s life. We have developed a comprehensive well-being measurement tool that offers more detail and resolution than other available questionnaire and scales.
Student Experience: I am also committed to supporting student welfare, I am involved in collaborative research aimed at comprehensively understanding student experience abd student well-being and have a particlar interest in the transition to university.
Sensory: Another main area of research is the psychology of smell and human olfaction. This research has looked at the effects of fragrances, scents and odours on cognition and a wide range of behaviours, ranging from simple reaction time to complex decision making. We have also examined the effects of scent on electrophysioloigcal responses such as EEG, heart rate and electrodermal response. It has also focused on the well-being effects of fragrances and how olfaction influences mood and emotions. This includes examining how smells might alleviate negative emotional states, such as stress. It extends to understanding how scent might influence positive states such as invigoration and alertness and generate relaxation and calmness.
