Research interests

I received my PhD in classics from the University of California at Berkeley in 2007. My much-revised thesis came out as The Birth of Hedonism in 2015 (Princeton). In 2016 I was the Principal Investigator for an AHRC international networking grant on continental approaches to Stoic philosophy, from which the primary outputs are two forthcoming edited volumes. In the interim, my article on psychoanalysis, Stoicism, and the ethics of interpretation exemplifies my continuing interest in French and post-Freudian philosophies in particular. I have also become fascinated by ancient Greek religious practices and their bearing on philosophy of mind and the cultivation of mental wellbeing. Throughout 2018-2019 I have been running workshops with psychotherapists, academics from various subjects, and modern pagans from various backgrounds in order to think about the interface of "pagan" polytheism and mental wellbeing. I have documented some of our activities at this project website.

Research Supervision

I'd be particularly enthusiastic about supervising work that combines contemporary continental philosophy or psychoanalysis with ancient Greek and Roman culture, especially philosophy, literature, or religion.

My teaching ranges from Greek and Latin language and literature at all levels through ancient rhetoric, philosophy, epic and tragic poetry in translation, myth and religion. I also teach a range of modern topics, from the clinical and philosophical aspects of psychoanalysis to cinema and comic books.

From 2015-2019 I was the Deputy Head of Subject and Director of Undergraduate Teaching. From 2016-2019 I was a member of the University Senate.
