My research interests centre around providing a good life for farmed animals. I am currently developing frameworks for the on-farm assessment of positive welfare opportunities for broiler chickens, pigs, and beef cattle. I am also collaborating with colleagues at Bristol vet school and the Royal Agricultural University to establish a framework defining higher welfare standards for the major farmed species. I act as facilitator to Global Animal Welfare Assurance (GAWA), an alliance of higher welfare assurance schemes from across the globe, whose mission is to increase the proportion of animals farmed to higher welfare standards worldwide: www.gawassurance.org.
Lizzie’s passion in life has always been the natural world. Her fascination for nature led her to read Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Zoology and graduating with first-class honours. Wishing to dedicate her life to improving animal welfare she carried out a PhD in Clinical Veterinary Sciences in the Animal Welfare and Behaviour research group at the University of Bristol, and worked for several animal welfare charities, before returning to academia, briefly at the University of Oxford and then back at Bristol Veterinary School. Her current work centres around higher welfare standards for farmed animals. Lizzie wants to live in a world where all animals used for food have a good life and a kind death, and where food is produced in a way that protects the planet and all its inhabitants. She also holds positions as a research consultant at the Sustainable Food Trust and project officer at the Royal Agricultural University, working on sustainable food production. Lizzie is also Project Manager at Better Origin, a tech company converting food waste into insect larvae as a sustainable protein source for livestock.
