Research interests

Dr Simpson is a human integrative cardiovascular physiologist, with a specific interest in understanding how the autonomic nervous system regulates the circulation in health and disease. Her doctoral research examined how autonomic control of blood pressure and skeletal muscle blood flow adapts to chronic hypoxia across lowland and highland native populations, and the mechanisms responsible for hypoxia-induced activation of the sympathetic nervous system. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr Emma Hart's CardioNomics research lab, based in the NIHR Clinical Research Facility. Dr Simpson is funded by the British Heart Foundation and her current research examines the mechanisms for exaggerated cardiovascular reactivity and its role in hypertension and stroke risk.
