Research interests

My research interests centre around social and educational inequalities that impact the socio-emotional development and academic achievement of children and young adults in England. In particular, I have a proffessional background and interest in Early Years Education.

For my PhD, I am interested in using a mixed-method approach to explore the ways in which month-of-birth effects cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes of children and young adults throughout primary and secondary school. I have proposed two congruent projects for my PhD research:

The first project will explore how summer-born children access, experience and achieve in the statutory assessments during reception class. The methods for this project will include gathering primary data through questionnaires for reception teachers. As well as, documentary analysis of policy documents and secondary data analysis of assessment data. The aim of this research is to understand how summer-born children access and experience the Reception Baselines Assessment and the Early Years Foundation Stage, through the perspectives and opinions of their teachers. Whilst also exploring how the teachers feel these children achieved in both assessment in the school year 2022/2023 and how well these assessments align with their own personal pedagogy and classroom practice.

The second project is interested in providing new evidence on how month-of-birth and school starting age effects SEND identification and academic outcomes throughout a child's school career. Advanced quantatitve methods will be applied to longitudinal data from the Millennium Cohort Study, to investigate the mechanisms that unerlie month-of-birth difference in children's socio-emotional development and assessment outcomes in the reception year. Then I will explore how these discrepencies in school starting age, socio-emotional development and assessment outcomes in reception, are associated with trajectories of academic outcomes and SEND identification throughout primary school and secondary school.
