My PhD is entitled “Estimating the Effects of ‘Daylight Saving Time’ on Cardiovascular Outcomes and Depressive Symptoms in the UK Population”. Using hospital and GP records I will compare cardiovascular and depressive incidents in the weeks before and after the spring and autumn clock changes. I will also use UK Biobank data to examine the effect of the clock changes on sleep phenotypes. I will then use Mendelian Randomization to investigate the effects of sleep on cardiovascular and depressive phenotypes. Finally, I will triangulate the evidence to formulate policy recommendations as to whether the UK government should abolish daylight saving time.
