Personal profile
Research interests
I am a filmmaker and a film scholar. My research specialism is on film performance — particularly the work of non-professional actors. I also have an interest in the relationship between cinema and work, which I am currently exploring through a combination of close analysis and practice-based research. My PhD examined the performances of non-professional actors in films ranging from the early silent period to contemporary digital cinema. My most recent film, Maquiladora (2020), is a reflexive video-ethnography on labour conditions in assembly plants in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Currently, I am working on a monograph on the non-professional actor derived from my doctoral research and finishing post-production on an observational documentary that explores the practice of artisanal pig slaughtering in Mallorca, Spain.
