Miguel Delibes is one of the most important post-war novelists in Spain. He belongs to a generation that experienced the devastating consequences of the Spanish Civil war. This period of dramatic social, economic and political change in Spain had a profound impact upon his writing and is intimately reflected in the themes, language and form of his writing. This research project will explore why Delibes has maintained and defended the use of realism in his fiction through a selection of his novels. It will examine the influence of the post-war period on his writing and also examine the author’s views on literature and commitment.
