Research interests

I’m interested in how photosynthesis is adapted to the environment. More specifically my research looks at how environmental signals are sensed and integrated into photosynthetic processes, how these mechanisms have evolved to allow adaptation to different environments, and whether these mechanisms can be used to improve photosynthesis to increase crop yields and resilience to the effects of climate change.

Current research is focused on how photosynthesis responds to multiple environmental conditions – for example, how exposure to combinations of high light, high temperature and high UV-B levels affects future photosynthetic responses to these environmental conditions. We’re also exploring how some desert species are able to generate exceptionally high photosynthetic rates and their ability to utilise very high light and temperature conditions to achieve these rates.

Work in the group uses a combination of photosynthetic physiology, genetic and bioinformatic approaches in model and non-model systems to approach these questions.
