Professor Paula Giliker

Paula Giliker is Professor of Comparative Law at the University of Bristol and specialises in comparative private law, tort law (especially vicarious liability) and contract law. She has previously held positions at the Universities of Oxford and Queen Mary, University of London.  She has written extensively on English, European and comparative contract and tort law and is the author of Tort (7^th edn, Sweet and Maxwell, 2020) and a contributor to leading practitioners' tort text, Clerk and Lindsell on Torts (23rd edn, Sweet and Maxwell, 2020). She is a former Chair of the British Association of Comparative Law and is currently the VIce-President Elect and Trustee of the Society of Legal Scholars of the UK and Ireland.  She is also a visiting professor at the Universities of Valencia and Hong Kong. Recent publications include: 'Analysing institutional liability for child sexual abuse in England and Wales and Australia: Vicarious liability, non-delegable duties and statutory intervention' (2019) 77 CLJ 506, ‘Comparative law and legal culture: Placing vicarious liability in comparative perspective’ (2018) 6 Chin JCL 265 and 'Codification, Consolidation, Restatement? How best to systemise the modern law of tort' (2021) 70 ICLQ 271  and monographs: The Europeanisation of English Tort Law (Hart, 2014) and Vicarious liability in tort: A Comparative Perspective (CUP, 2010).  A leading comparative law and private law scholar, she is on the editorial board of the International and Comparative Law Quarterly,  on the international editorial board of the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Professional Negligence and an Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. She is currently working on an edited collection, Vicarious Liability in the Common Law World, due to be published by Hart in 2022.
